The Region 4 Tour rolled in to Suffolk for the latest instalment of the pool series the venue hosting it this time round was the Premier Pool Club. It's an eerie sight seeing all the clubs pool tables on the go at the unearthly hour of 9.00 in the morning but that's what happened as the early starters practised before battle commenced at 10:00.
In round one Peter Mullanney (Norfolk) put an end to Essex's Alan Pointer's dream of gaining 3 ranking points from 3 events. Pointer never really got going and quickly found himself 2 frames down. Pointer then produced a good clearance, even if, by his own admission ran out of position at least six times during the clearance but managed to pull it of to trail by a frame.
That was as close as Mullaney was going to let him get and won the next three to win 5-1.
If the above match was a bit one sided the clash between Matt Parnell (Suffolk) and Darren Ciniglio (Essex) went the distance. The first four frames were traded on a one for one basis, then Ciniglio broke Purnell's serve to lead 3-2. It was then back to trading frames until Ciniglio crossed the winning line at 5-4.
In a battle of the giants Norfolk's Simon Ramm took on Hertfordshire's Tony Vickers neither player would look out of place in the final but here they were trying to negotiate their way passed the first round. Ramm took first blood bur Vickers hit back by taking 4 of the next five frames to lead 4-2. Ramm pulled a frame back to trail by a single frame. Vickers then drew on his I.P.A. Tour experience to kill off the Norfolk threat by taking the eighth frame and end the contest early.
In the opening match of the round 2 Neil Toms, the winner of the last event at Norfolk, made short work of Martyn Smith from Bedfordshire. He went through without dropping a single framer.
Alan Mower took on Suffolk team mate Paul Keeble with the match going pretty much to form with Mower going 3 up before Keeble posted a frame. Although having won the 4th frame that was as good as it got for Keeble as Mower showed his class by taking the next 2.
Tony Vickers having taken out Simon Ramm in round one found himself up against another Norfolk player in the shape of Peter Mullaney. Vickers went one down but took the next two. Mullanney then decided to retaliate by hitting Vickers for two to put him back in front. The next two frames were traded before Vickers finally succumbed to Mullaney by losing the next two frames.
Ian Clarke (Herts) and Paul Slinger (Suffolk) had a real battle with Clarke taking the first, only to see Slinger take the next two. Clarke levelled the match again by taking the forth frame. Again Slinger took the lead only to see Clarke hit back with two frames of his own to reach the brink of victory. Yet again Slinger managed to claw his way back into the match. In a tense final frame Clarke eventually came out on top.
In the last 16 Neil Toms march towards retaining his title continued with a narrow 5-4 win over Suffolk's Neil Twomey. Toms went two up only to see Twomey come back with a three frame salvo. Toms responded by taking the next two to re-take the lead at 4-3 Twomey won the next but Toms held his nerves and won the final frame.
Tom's opponent in the last final Paul Whearty (Essex) was quietly progressing through the rounds until he came up against Bedfordshire's Matt Barcock. Barcock ended Whearty's interest in spectacular fashion with a resounding 5-1 win.
Danny Miller, the inaugural tour winner, progressed to the quarter finals via a 5-3 win over Hertfordshire team mate Paul James.
Bedfordshire's Paul Cox was looking menacing when booking his place in the quarters with a 5-0 win over Dylan Thomas of Suffolk.
The first quarter final result in was Tom's 6-3 win over Shaun Godfrey (Essex) Although Godfrey took the opening frame it was pretty much downhill from there on as Tom's took command and clocked up the frames he needed.
Next in was the Peter Mullaney (Norfolk) and Matt Barcock (Bedfordshire) result. Mullaney shot into a 3-0 lead before Barcock got of the mark. Mullaney turned the screw by taking frame five to lead 4-1. Barcock took the next two frames to keep his hopes alive. Everyone thought the match was over when Mullaney took the eighth frame to lead 5-3. How often has it been said that the hardest frame to win is the winning one and for Mullaney it was certainly true as Barcock set of on a three frame run book his place in the semi final. In doing so leaving Mullaney to wonder how he blew a three a three frame lead in a race to six.
The match between Paul Cox (Bedfordshire) and Carl Clack was not the nail biter it appeared to be as Cox ripped into Clack racing to a 5-1 lead. Clack is a very experienced player but it was asking a bit too much to expect a Houdini style escape from Clack and so it proved. Clack did his best by taking two frames but Cox was never really in trouble once he had the 5-2 lead. And Cox eventually booked his semi final place via a mistake from Clack.
Danny Miller took care of Suffolk's Neil Twomey and did it in style too! He took the first two frames, Twomey posted his first before Miller took another two to lead 4-1; Twomey added his second after that but again Miller took two frames on the bounce to clinch the match 6-2.
This set up a Cox V Miller and Toms V Barcock semi final in the first semi Neil Toms made Matt Barcock pay for the cavalier style he adopted, Once Barcock had gone for it and missed the clearance, Toms the wily old fox tied Barcock down until he was ready to go for and the main reason for Tom's 6-2 win was the fact that when Toms went for it he got it.
The Miller and Cox semi was totally different even though Miller took five of the opening seven frames. You always had the thought that Cox was going to come back at Miller. Just when it looked all over as Miller was potting well and looked like finishing he fell over, Cox seized the opportunity with both hands as you knew he would. That made the score 5-3. In the following frame Miller again went for it and yet again failed to finish the frame, this time by going in off his penultimate ball. Cox again made him pay the highest price and closed the gap to 5-4. Undeterred by the two previous failures he was still in the mood to go for the throat. This time there was no mistake and he made his passage to his second Tour final look easy.
The final was a great spectacle to watch and was a repeat of the first tour final with both players going for it at every opportunity. This was probably helped by the fact that they are both from the same league and both are East Herts Interleague players which Toms is captain of In addition they are both in the Hertfordshire inter county team so they know each others games really well.
Miller took the first two with excellent dishes. Not to be outdone Toms took the third with a break and dish. He followed that up with a dish of Millers break to level the match.
In the fifth frame Toms went in off the break Miller, for once, failed to capitalise on the mistake from Toms. That was tom's cue to make Miller pay as he cleared up.
In the next Miller broke an went for a dish which was getting harder with each shot he played but all credit to him for getting down to his last ball before going in off. Guess what Toms cleared up to go 4-2 up. It now seemed the pressure was starting to get to Miller as he miscued at the start of the frame leaving Toms with an open table and two visits but for once Toms failed to clear and it was miller's chance to clear up from an unforced error by Toms which he duly did. The next frame was fairly scrappy and eventually turned into the first tactical frame of the match but it still only lasted for two visits by Miller and three for Toms as Toms claimed yet another frame to lead 5-3.
From that point onwards there was only ever going to be one winner and so it was that Neil Toms won his second R4 Tour win and consolidate his No 1 spot in the rankings. Consolation for Miller comes in his elevation to the No 2 spot.
The region 4 road show moves to Wisbech in a fortnight's time for the next instalment of this popular Tour.
